July 2009 It's Wash Time at the Longleat Parrot House!
Longleat Parrots enjoy a cooling shower
While the country basks in hot weather, bear a moment’s thought for the keepers at Longleat Safari Park as they find exciting and novel ways to keep the animals cool!
It’s not paddling pools and ice creams but cold showers and fruit lollies that meet the exacting requirements of these exotic creatures.
As Deputy Head Warden, Ian Turner, explained “Longleat has over 90 species of animal within the Safari Park and Pets Corner. Although they are all well adapted to the variables of the British climate, we do try and vary their diet or provide new experiences that are relevant to the weather.
“The parrots in Pets Corner are a prime example as it is essential that we keep their body temperatures down during the hot weather. Daily soakings with a hosepipe are perfect as the parrots adore their bathing sessions and the cold water really cools them down.
“We have to admit that they look pretty bedraggled for a while afterwards but with much feather shaking and the warm weather, they
soon smarten up again in time for the visitors” he added.
Longleat keepers also apply cooling mechanisms to some of the larger animals. The giraffe are provided fruit based ice lollies and the rhino keepers regularly top up the mud baths in the rhino enclosures to ensure plenty of wallowing space.
